Position Summary

The Apprentice Heavy Duty Mechanic supports Journeyperson Heavy Duty Mechanics in the inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of heavy-duty equipment, trucks, and vehicles. This role provides practical, hands-on experience while completing apprenticeship requirements and developing technical skills in mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist Journeyperson Mechanics with the inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of heavy-duty equipment and vehicles.
• Perform routine servicing including oil changes, lubrication, filter replacement, and fluid checks.
• Assist with diagnosing mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic system issues.
• Learn to use diagnostic tools, service manuals, and technical documentation.
• Help repair and replace engines, transmissions, brakes, suspension components, steering systems, and other mechanical components.
• Perform preventative maintenance and safety inspections.
• Assist with equipment breakdowns and emergency repairs as required.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
• Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and workplace regulations.
• Properly use and maintain tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment.
• Complete apprenticeship training, documentation, and school requirements.
• Communicate effectively with supervisors, mechanics, operators, and team members.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Registered in or eligible to enroll in a Heavy Duty Equipment Technician Apprenticeship Program.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn.
• Ability to read and understand technical documentation.
• Commitment to safe work practices and teamwork.

Working Conditions

• Work performed in shop and field environments.
• Exposure to varying weather, noise, dust, and heavy equipment operations.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs (23 kg) and perform physically demanding tasks.
